Day-to-Day Operation

Warning

This document is under heavy development. Please get in touch to let us know which sections we should prioritize.

Once Sobamail Desktop is installed and you are logged in, it works like a normal email client -- read, write, and organize your mail as usual. This page covers the behaviors that are unique to Sobamail so you know what to expect as you work.

Working offline

Everything you do in Sobamail Desktop is saved locally first and then synced quietly in the background as connectivity allows. You can read, reply, and use your apps with no connection at all; your changes are queued and reconciled the next time you come online. There is nothing to press -- syncing is automatic.

Direct connections

When another Sobamail user is reachable on the same network -- for example a colleague in the same office, or another of your own devices on your home Wi-Fi -- Sobamail Desktop can exchange updates with them directly, peer-to-peer (P2P), without routing through the Sobamail servers. This keeps shared data flowing even when the link to the wider internet is slow or down, and it is completely automatic: you do not need to configure anything, and it behaves the same as syncing through the servers.

Private beta

Direct connections are currently rolling out to selected accounts. If you'd like early access, get in touch.

Large attachments

Sobamail stores attachment data in your mailbox rather than as links to third-party services, and a single attachment can be up to 1 GB. Large files transfer in the background just like everything else, so you can keep working while they upload or download.
